Yet another way of viewing this is to realize that the amount of food eaten over and above actual dietary requirements, the "luxury food" consumption of an individual in the US, (at an average cost of $459), would supply the annual caloric needs of an entire household in such countries as Costa Rica, South Africa and Poland, places where there is national food sufficiency, and of more than two households in Bangladesh, Ethiopia and Rwanda, where there is insufficient food.
