FAO reports 34% of world grain went to feed in 2011/12

GRAIN STATISTIC: “1/3 of grain worldwide goes to livestock”.According to the FAO: May 2012 Food Outlook: Global Market Analysis, 34 percent of world cereal production went to “feed” in 2011/12..Compiled by Ria Knapp from data in this document:.World cereal production: 789.8 million tonnes (feed) ÷ World cereal feed: 2344.1 million tonnes (total world production) = 0.337 or 33.7% The FAO defines “cereal” as wheat, coarse grains and rice. If rice was taken out of the equation, the statistic would still hold true for wheat and coarse grain combined: World wheat + coarse grain production: 700.0 + 1163.9 = 1863.9 World wheat + coarse grain feed use: 138.9 + 638.7 = 777.6 Feed / Total Production: 777.6 ÷ 1863.9 = 0.417 or 41.7%for 2011/12 data: May 2012 Food Outlook: Global Market Analysis, http://www.fao.org/fileadmin/user_upload/newsroom/docs/Final%20web%20ver...
